Yes. Counselling takes place when a counsellor meets a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having; distress they may be experiencing or perhaps their dissatisfaction with life or loss of a sense of direction and purpose. It is always at the request of the client and no one can properly be "sent" for counselling nor will a counsellor tell you what to do.

In counselling sessions the client is encouraged to explore various aspects of their life and feelings concerning them, talking about them freelyand openlyin a way that is rarely possible with friends or family, to a person who neither judges nor offer advise. Bottled-up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can become very intense. An opportunity to express them and talk about them in a secure place can help dissolve them, reduce the pain caused by them, thus making them easier to understand.
